From this basic example was hoping someone could clarify why the error is happening.

Even though SomeParentMethod is a method of the parent, with inheritance, it looks like order of method chaining matters?

The meta file:

---@meta

---@class Parent
---@field name string
Parent = {}

---@return self
function Parent:New() end

---@return self
function Parent:SomeParentMethod() end


---@class Child : Parent
---@field age number
Child = {}

---@return self
function Child:New() end

---@return self
function Child:SomeChildMethod() end

and the warning:

The ---@return self is not working as one might have expected, and has been reported in multiple duplicated issues.
At the moment you can use this workaround: #3057 (comment)

In short:

• by using @generic to match the param self, and finally return this generic type
• => then this function can return the type based on caller

---@generic T
---@param self T
---@return T
function Parent:SomeParentMethod() end
--> now when inheritance class call this method, the return type can be resolved correctly
